There is no doubt email has revolutionized the way we communicate with one another. Millions of emails are transmitted daily throughout the world to everyone connected to the Internet. The question is, how do you know which emails are legitimate and which ones compromise your computer protection and internet security? If you think you know, you may be in for a little surprise.

What if someone told you they could become anyone you know (or any business, for that matter) without your knowledge? Some may think this is ridiculous, but it is not far from the truth. Complete strangers can take your email address and email anyone they wanted… all without knowing your email username and password. If they want, they can even attach malware (short for malicious software) to the emails that can evade antivirus protection and other forms of computer protection. So how do you know if an email came from someone you know versus a complete stranger that just used their email address?

Granted, the majority of email you receive is probably legitimate, but it is important to know the above exists. In fact, malicious emails are most commonly used to exploit your computer protection and personal vulnerabilities in three ways.

1. Entice you to download and run an email attachment with cloaked malware

2. Entice you to open up an email with malicious scripting

3. Entice you to forfeit personal and sensitive information

To protect yourself and your system from these email exploits, you can not strictly rely on computer protection and internet security software since they will never give you 100% security. Knowing this, you’ll now learn proper personal and computer protection measures by looking for the appropriate signs of malicious emails.

The first thing to know is each part of an email can be randomly altered either by a hacker or a computer worm to look unique and legitimate. This includes:

1. The To:, From:, CC: and BCC: fields

2. The Subject line

3. The Body text

4. The email attachment name

5. The email attachment extension (i.e. .exe, .zip, etc.)

While antivirus software can not provide 100% computer protection, it definitely helps in detecting malicious emails. Antivirus software aside though, you need to analyze all your email before opening anything. If you don’t know the sender, if the subject sounds bogus, or common words or names are spelled awkwardly, it should raise a red flag. Even if the email looks like it came from someone you know, it never hurts to get a confirmation. In short, if the email looks suspicious, don’t open it!

Identifying malicious email without attachments or code in them is a different story. These emails are called phishing emails because they lure you to reveal personal information. They usually look like they come from companies and entice you to either click on a web link or call a phone number.

If you stumble into phishing emails, the two most important things to remember are first, never click on links in an email. If an email asks you to click on a web link, open up a web browser and manually type it in. Second, if you are unsure of the email’s integrity, go to the company’s website, contact their customer service department, and inquire about the email.

While the above are the two core things to always consider when looking for phishing emails, it never hurts to have additional layers of computer protection. With that in mind, download a free legitimate anti-phishing toolbar and make sure your antivirus software has the most recent updates on it.

Email is a wonderful thing; just know that malicious email can bypass computer protection and internet security. With people and computer worms having the capability of emulating any person or company, you always need to stay alert and analyze each and every email. By following these strategies and tactics for identifying emails, you will be steps ahead of the typical Internet user and dramatically increase your computer protection and internet security.

Computer Protection Products; Why You Need Them

The need to protect yourself and your computer is an essential part of every day internet surfing. Computer viruses, adware, spyware are all lurking in the background waiting to cause harm to your computer. Today we are going to look at why your need computer protection products.

1. Spyware is computer software that is secretly installed onto your computer as you surf the internet. It is designed to take full or partial control over your computer without your consent or knowledge. Often these spyware programs gather information about your surfing habits and report back to a third party. Other programs take complete control of your computer. Spyware programs, without your knowledge, can redirect your web browser to a site containing harmful viruses.

Have you noticed lately that your computer may be running very slow? The cause my be attributed to several spyware programs running on your computer all at the same time. Some may be a low threat while others may be a high threat.

2. The computer virus is a small software program that is intended to spread from one computer to another. It is intended to interfere with the operation of your computer. A virus can corrupt or even delete data on your computer; it may even erase everything on your hard drive. Viruses are also designed to spread itself from computer to computer through the use of your e-mail program.

Some of the methods used to spread a virus are through video files, images and most commonly through e-mail attachments. Viruses can also be found in illicit software and other programs that you may have purposely or inadvertently downloaded from the internet.

3. Worms and Trojan Horses are two programs that are often confused as a virus. A virus needs an existing file to attach itself to while worms and Trojan horses do not. A worm sends copies of itself by way of a computer network which in turn harms the network. A worm’s side effects may be minimal or they may damage or even erase files.

A Trojan horse is a file that appears to be harmless but in reality it has disguised itself in hopes that a user will open the program releasing its harmful effects. Some Trojan horse programs are harmless but the majority are designed to do harm to your computer and others by spread of the program.

Ok now for the good news, there are ways to protect yourself from these harmful programs. Computer anti-virus and spyware detection programs are common today. I have found that a single protection program is not sufficient protection for the computer.

For my everyday protection, I have a program to remove spyware and a separate program for virus protection. Where the anti-virus program is great for virus protection the spyware program is great for removing spyware and Trojan horse files. The important thing to remember is to update your program files often and at least run your spyware program everyday. Get rid of the bad programs by quarantining them and start enjoying yourself on the internet again.

I hope by writing this article that I have helped you to understand why you need computer protection products. There are no good reasons why we all can’t use the internet for entertainment or to run a business. Just because there will always be people out there that get a kick out of making people suffer, make sure you are protected.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Protect Your Computer – 3 Ways to Protect Your Computer from a Virus

Are you interested in learning how to protect your computer from a virus? A virus attack can render your computer basically useless and most of the time you have no idea that you have a virus on your computer until it’s too late. Here are 3 ways that you can protect your computer from a nasty virus or worm.

1. Early Detection

One of the best ways to protect your computer from a computer virus is to know the signs and symptoms of a computer that is infected with a virus. Is your computer slower than usual? Do you get a lot of strange pop-ups and advertisements whenever you log in to the internet? Are there strange icons on your desktop for programs that you don’t remember installing? Does your computer suddenly shut down or take an abnormally long time to start up? These are all symptoms that your computer may be infected with a computer virus. Do yourself a favor and protect your computer by downloading some antivirus software. Here is some software that I recommend – They offer a free scan so you will know whether or not your computer is infected right away.

2. Watch Those E-mail Attachments

One of the most popular ways that hackers spread computer viruses is through e-mail attachments. If you want to protect your computer from a potential virus infection you will need to make sure that you only open e-mail attachments from people that you know and trust. Here is another thing to keep in mind with e-mail attachments. There are a number of viruses out there that once executed will hijack your e-mail client and e-mail itself to all of the people in your e-mail address book. With this in mind, if you get a strange e-mail from one of your friends then double check with them before opening any attachments that it may contain.

3. Invest in Some Antivirus Software

This is by far the most important thing that you can do to protect your computer from a computer virus or worm. Antivirus software will protect your computer not only by scanning and removing any existing virus threats, but it will also prevent future viruses attacks by monitoring your system. Most antivirus software programs update automatically for new virus threats that could harm your computer. If you want to protect your computer and keep it functioning properly then you need a dependable antivirus program. For some popular antivirus software that I recommend Click Here.

Warning: Hackers Using Spyware Steal Identity And Intimate Photos From Computer

As we journey more into the world of technology, we cringe at the thought that someone somewhere is on a very expensive shopping spree with credit cards and identification under your name. Warning: 27.3 million Americans identities have been stolen!

A nightmare indeed, but federal authorities recently unraveled a scheme by a man using file sharing software to get into other user’s computer system. Gregory Thomas Kopiloff of Seattle, allegedly used P2P Software to steal the personally identifiable information of at least 83 people. Kopiloff stole ,000 worth of merchandise using user’s personal data.

You probably have used or know someone that has used software like BearShare.com, Limewire.com, Kazaa.com, Soulseek.com, Fastrack.com. These type of software actually shares a particular folder on the hard drive of your computer with potentially thousands of users utilizing the software and that are part of this so-called “file-sharing network.” The users of this file sharing are in danger of having the computer hacker having access to sensitive data such as social security numbers, tax information, credit information and other personal information. With this type of software, a hacker can even have access to individuals personal digital pictures, music and all types of documents. According to the National Research Council, “Computers at Risk,” 1991, “The modern thief can steal more with a computer than with a gun. Tomorrow’s terrorist may be able to do more damage with a keyboard than with a bomb. Can we stop this?

Monster.com was also hit by hackers not too long ago. 1.3 million monster.com users personal information were exploited. Later on, those same crooks that broke into Monster.com vault of personal data went on to hit USAJOBS.com, the federal government’s official job search site and stole over 150,000 user’s information. Credit Card companies have also been hit.

It’s time to secure your computer with your life. The luxury of the internet is a two edge sword. We can indulge ourselves in all the information that we want, explore the world with a few clicks of a button, communicate instantly and we can shop through all the multitudes of stores and hundreds and thousands of products. We are the ruler of our own internet kingdom!

But can we manage our internet castle, or does the evils of the outside world can control and destroy us. It’s a digital world, my friend. Billions of bits of information cross our little technological planet. From thieves, to child molesters and to your boss – we are more vulnerable now than 20 years ago. A sacrifice for all the goodies we can get from our “lovely” internet? Definitely.

Here’s a few simple things to do to avoid a fatal intrusion into your life:

1. Don’t have personal info stored in your computer. (easier said than done, most people have their whole lives inside that little box). But limiting such things, as social security numbers, tax info and identification numbers from your files can help tremendously.

2. Don’t file share. (Good luck on that one.) And don’t give out any personal information from an unsolicited email! Sadly, many people do this.

3. Always keep in mind that whatever you have in your computer, anyone can possibly get. For example, those special valentine pictures of your intimate other. It happens more than you think. A couple from Virginia had intimate pictures on their personal computer and were shocked to see those same pictures on the web on a adult website. Who would’ve’ known, huh?

4. Powerful Anti-hacking software. For example, The Nuker at www.stop-hackers.com is a super software that can stop hackers to get into your system. Best of all, it’s free to try.

5. Keep laptops out of prying eyes. Oh, yea -don’t lend out your computer to anyone! Let’s be stingy with this, you guys. Nothing personal.

Anti-hacking/Anti-spy ware is mandatory. But don’t rely on those fake software, you got to use a legitimate software. Remember 9 out of 10 pc’s are infected with spy ware or ad ware. Be wise. Your computer and your life depends on it!

To stop any type of hacking or for more information please review www.stop-hackers.com. With new hacking software and creepy crawlers all over the internet, you need a good anti-spyware product.

To fight back against identity theft, go to ftc.gov. Learn more. Be wise. If you want to know what real hackers are doing today then check out www.attrition.org. This is one of the places on the Internet where hackers “gloat” about their attacks on innocent individuals.

Free Federal Credit Report – Directly From Your Computer

Free Federal Credit Report – Directly From Your Computer

You can now use your computer to gain access to a variety of financial information.

One of the best things that you can gain access to is your credit report.

It used to be the case that you would have to get your credit score from the bureaus directly or over the phone.

Aurora Lillo Editor of the “Credit Report And Scores” website — http://www.CreditReportAndScores.biz — pointed out;

“…Now, you have the more secure and quicker method of getting your score directly from your personal computer in the comfort of your home. Doing it this way means that you will be able to print out the report and place it in your files…”

It is a federal law that you are entitled to a free report from each of the three major credit bureaus once a year. That means that you can get a free report every four months if you space it out correctly. You are going to want to take advantage of your free looks as often as possible. Doing so from your computer is the best way, because it is the quickest and most secure.

“…Take advantage of federal laws such as this one that are designed to give you the financial upper hand. If you want, you can even pay to have looks at your credit reports more often than the three free times per year. If you are able to view your credit report often, then you will be far ahead of the game when it comes to personal finance. Your credit score is being an increasingly important part of your financial self, don’t let yourself be left behind…” added A. Lillo.
